What Roofing Material is Right for You?

It is time to replace your roof, but many homeowners find that choosing a new roof is a daunting task. Roofs are an expensive, long-term investment, so you want to make sure that you get the best possible option. What roofing material is right for you? Check out some of the options below to get a jump start on your decision.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing material in the USA because they are easy to install, come in a variety of colors, work almost anywhere, and are relatively cheap. Typically, asphalt shingles will last from 20-30 years if properly maintained.

Wood Shingles/Shakes

Wood shingles and shakes are the most attractive roofing material available, adding a specific luxurious style to the home. They are made from wood, like cedar and redwood, and are rather expensive. The downside to wood roofing is that it doesn’t suit all conditions. In damp conditions, its lifespan drastically decreases, and it is ill-advised for those who live in an area with wildfires. However, under the right conditions, this material would last up to sixty years.

Slate Shingles

Slate shingles are one of the highest quality roofing materials available because it can last up to 200 years if properly maintained. It is waterproof and resistant to mold, which is ideal for wet climates. However, slate shingles are heavy, easy to break, and installation is tricky.

Clay and Concrete Tiles

Clay tiles are trendy in hot, coastal regions and have a distinctive look. It is a highly durable material that can withstand extreme storms and high winds. While it is an expensive investment, clay tiles can last as long as a century.

Concrete tiles are the cheaper cousin to clay tiles. They, too, can withstand high winds and can often be designed to resemble clay tiles. Concrete tiles generally last about 50 years and are about two thirds the price of clay tiles.

Metal

The most commonly seem metal roofing is standing seam metal roofing. This material is becoming more popular for its modern look and protective qualities. It is excellent for areas that receive high amounts of snowfall. Also, it is perfect for areas prone to have wildfires due to its fireproof quality. Depending on conditions and maintenance, these roofs can last anywhere from 30 to 70 years.

Another option is metal shingles or shakes. They are made from stamped steel or aluminum that are finished with a high-quality coating. They can even be designed to look like asphalt, wooden, or slate roofing.

Green Roof

If you are looking to go in a more extreme, eco-friendly roof style, you could install a green roof. Typically, having moss or plant materials on a roof is considered hazardous, but when properly planned for it can be a viable roof option. Your roof will be able to absorb rain, add thermal insulation, grow plants, and add oxygen back into the air. However, for this to be a viable option, you have to be in the right environment for the plants to grow.

Now that you have an idea of what kind of roofing material is right for you, it is time to reach out to a roof installer and take your home to the next level!
