Pros & Cons of Different Roofing Materials

Roofing

Is it time to replace your roof, but you are unsure what material is right for you? Should you go with what you had before, or choose something different? Before you make a decision, you need to consider the pros and cons of different roofing materials.

Asphalt Shingles

With relatively easy installation, fire resistance, and color variety, asphalt shingles are among the most popular choices for roofing materials. Combine that with being inexpensive, easy to repair, and availability for most homes, it makes sense why there are so common. However, asphalt shingles require high maintenance practices, are not environmentally friendly, and only last 15 to 30 years. Due to this, many home and business owners are now expanding their options to different roofing materials.

Wood Shingles or Shakes

Wood shingles and shakes have a long lifespan, lasting up to 25 years, and provide that natural look many homeowners adore. In addition, wood shingles provide excellent insulation and are easy to repair or replace. However, wood shingles are not advised for homes in regions that suffer from wildfires due to their high risk of flammability. If you add that they are challenging to install, are not very durable, and require a lot of maintenance, you can see why they are losing popularity.

Metal

The popularity of metal roofs has spiked within the last decade. Metal roofing can be created using steel, aluminum, and copper. They are lightweight, durable, fire retardant, energy-efficient, and recyclable. Combine that with the fact that they come in many styles and colors, can be installed over an existing roof, and last up to 60 years, it is easy to see why they are becoming one of the top roofing material choices. Sadly, metal roofs are expensive and difficult to install.

Clay Tiles

Clay tile roofs give a home that Spanish coastal vibe that many homeowners love. They come in a variety of colors, are low maintenance, and last a very long time. While all of this is fantastic, the cons of clay tiles are that they are difficult to install, extremely heavy, and easy to break. This, combined with the high cost, makes it uncommon for the average homeowner.

Slate Tiles

Like clay tiles, slate tiles have a long lifespan, are easy to maintain, and provide a unique look that many homeowners love. Unfortunately, it also is very heavy and expensive.

Concrete Tiles

Unlike clay tiles and slate tiles, concrete tiles are fairly lightweight, making it easy to install. It is highly durable, requires minimal maintenance, and comes in a variety of styles and colors. If it weren’t for its high cost, it would be a popular choice.
